1st XI v Parkview 1st XI
Saturday 9th Spetember 2006
Result: Parkview 0 Victorians 1
The match got off to an impressive start with a good attack from Victorians within the first minute of play, resulting with a free just outside the circle. The defence made good passes round the back, changing from one side of the pitch to the other. One of these led to an attack by Gemma Knox and this was followed by some good runs by the forwards. The play then was more evenly contested, with most of the play being in the middle 50 metres of the pitch until they had a great piece of attacking play from Rachel Johnston, resulting in Vic’s first short corner of the day, but nothing came of it. There was sharp and accurate passing round the defence from Jenny Hayes, Sophie Bloor, Caroline Fusco and Kerry Harvey resulting in more attacking play by the forwards.
20 minutes into play came a great piece of hockey starting off in the left back defence by Kerry Harvey, passing to Meme Knox followed by an excellent pass by Sophie Bloor to Rachel Johnston, who had a cracking strike at goal. However Vicky Green, Parkview’s goalie made a superb save to prevent Victorians from having their first goal of the day. Victorians then had 3 more penalty corners but nothing came of them. Within a minute of Nikki Tipping’s substitution, she made her first strike of the day but the keeper got her pads on it. Victorians had more chances but couldn’t convert. A few minutes later Natasha Hamilton had a great attempt at a reverse stick shot, which didn’t result in anything. We then had a high-quality attacking play down the right started off by Jenny Hayes’s pass to Gemma Knox then onto Nikki Tipping, resulting in penalty corner number 5 for Victorians.
Victorians started the second half well and had a few penalty corners created by good attacking play by the midfield and forwards, including one move from Andrea Hamilton and Nikki Tipping. Penalty corner number 8 resulted in Victorians’s first goal of the day with an excellent strike by Katie Knox. About 15 minutes into the second half Victorians were awarded a stroke which was not converted. Victorians then came back again for some greater passing around the defence and more great attacking play by the mid-field and forwards. About 20 minutes into the second half Vic were awarded there 11th penalty corner of the day which was taken well but also well saved and defended by the opposition.
For the next 10 minutes Victorians had some great pieces of attacking play resulting in yet more penalty corners. One piece of play which stood out was great passing around by the forwards, Rachel Johnston, Natasha Hamilton and Hannah McMillan. With a couple of minutes to go Victorians had their last attacking play of the day, which was probably one of their best. It started from the defence, then into the midfield and finally to Rachel Johnston who had a superb shot on goal, just going over the cross bar. Overall Victorians had 18 penalty corners whilst Parkview had only one. This shows good defending by the team overall, and good attacking, but they only managed to score one goal!
